If you are suffering from broken, worn down and damaged fillings, tooth decay or ,if you have a chipped tooth these can sometimes be repaired with a filling that looksvery natural. .İf one the other hand the damage is too extensive but not severe enough for a crown, a dental inlay or onlay (often
referred to as partial crowns) may be the best solution to restore the tooth & its function, maximise its strength, & create a natural looking smile.
İnlays are best suited for restoring the biting surface of the teeth, they are small fillings that fit into the bititng surface of the teeth
Onlays cover a larger area of the tooth and are better suited to bigger cavities.
Inlays and onlays can be made from a variety of different materials, including porcelain, composite resin & gold, in recent times hard-wearing tooth-coloured porcelain has become a more popular choice of material. This is a more aesthetic way to restore the teeth and creates a more natural-
looking smile.
Placing an inlay or an onlay is a simple procedure usually performed during two appointments. During the first appointment with local anaestehtic the tooth is cleansed, an impression taken & usually the
tooth is covered with a temporary until the next appointment. The imporession is sent to our labroratory where a customised restoration is prepared that will fit precesely with your tooth. At your second appointment the temporary will be removed and the permenent inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth, checked for alignment and a final polish made.
Advantages of inlays & onlays include the following;
- Repais & strengthens the damaged tooth by upto 75%
- Reduce risk of future tooth loss.
- Tooth coöoured onlays & inlays provide a more natural looking smile being tooth coloured.
- Metal free so the tooth doesn’t contract or expand with temperature change
- Prolongs the life of the tooth
- Made from durabe materils than can last upto 30 years.
- Preserves the natural tooth as much as possible especially thos teeth with only moderate decay.
In some cases, where the damage to the tooth is not extensive enough to merit an entire crown
inlays & onlays can provide a very good alternative.
